There are 75 different hiking trails comprising a total of 450 miles in the Black Hills, according to the Black Hills Badlands and Lake Association. World-renowned trails can be found in and around Custer State Park, Badlands National Park and the George Mickelson Trail. Additionally, kayakers can enjoy a day paddling on either Deerfield Lake or Pactola Lake. Custer State Park Resort

Four independent resorts are located within Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Each lodge is open May through October, and each is ideally situated for those seeking to take advantage of the many miles of trails located within Custer. Choices are the State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge, Legion Lake Lodge or the Blue Bell Lodge. As of 2009, rates at the four lodges ranged between $100 and $200 per night.

Cedar Pass Lodge

Without televisions or telephones, the cabins at the Cedar Pass Lodge offer visitors a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The Deadwood Gulch

The Deadwood Gulch is conveniently located for hikers seeking access to the George Mickelson Trail. The Deadwood is also a short drive away from major attractions like Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. The acclaimed Creekside Restaurant is on site, providing a diverse menu including everything from buffalo burgers to wild boar. The hotel has 90 rooms, with many overlooking Whitewood Creek.
