Sedona, Arizona, is not just for crystal gazing and aura reading. The Sedona Rouge Hotel is only one mile from the Thunder Mountain trailhead. It offers three types of accommodations: 77 guest rooms, four one- and two-bedroom suites, and six spa suites with soaking tubs. This Spanish-syle hotel is furnished with antiques. Rooms have step-out balconies that overlook the spectacular red-rock desert scenery, gardens, or the pool area with its outdoor fireplace and Jacuzzi. Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo Spa

The five-star Enchantment Resort, on 70 acres near Boynton Canyon, borders the Coconino National Forest and Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness. It has 234 rooms, including adobe casitas and elegant 1,400-square-foot suites. Each luxurious room is decorated in desert earth tones and has an outdoor deck overlooking the canyon. Take the five-mile hike into Boynton Canyon's red-rock formations, and then dine at the hotel's AAA Four Diamond-rated Yavapai Restaurant, which has excellent 180-degree views of the canyon. The Mii Amo Spa offers Native American and Ayurvedic treatments, and for the kids, there's Camp Coyote, where they'll learn about Native American culture and the Southwest environment. Rates as of 2009 start at $220.

El Portal Sedona

The intimate El Portal is comprised of 12 rooms furnished in the Arts and Crafts tradition, and built around a hacienda-style courtyard. Each suite has custom-made wooden doors, 18-inch thick adobe walls and fireplaces built from river rock. Some suites have adjoining private gardens or sitting terraces. The concierge can arrange balloon rides, jeep tours and even trips to the Grand Canyon, which is only about two hours away. The El Portal welcomes pets. Rates as of 2009 range from $200 to $400.
