Murfreesboro, Tenn., is located only 35 miles southeast of Nashville and 30 miles from Percy Priest Lake, which is surrounded by several recreation areas with trails, swimming and boating opportunities, Long Hunter State Park and Nashville Shores, a popular man-made beach and water park. It is also the home of Middle Tennessee State University and only a few exits up the interstate from the Jack Daniels Distillery.

Barfield Crescent Park

The 430-acre Barfield Crescent Park is a community park with a variety of available activities. There are 10 picnic shelters for those looking to have an outdoor meal, an educational wilderness station where visitors can learn more about the flora and fauna of the area, and more than seven miles of trails for those who want to take a hike through the woods.

There is no fee to enter or park at Barfield Crescent Park. There are no amenities on site, so visitors must bring all of their own food, drinks and other necessities.

Stones River National Battlefield & Cemetery

The site of one of the most violent battles of the Civil War, Stones River National Battlefield now serves as a memorial to the three-day battle, in which 81,000 people were killed and 23,000 were wounded. The nearby Stones River National Cemetery opened in 1865 as the burial place of more than 6,000 soldiers from the Union army.

Admission to the battlefield and cemetery is free. Hiking, biking and fishing are all permitted on the grounds of the battlefield.

Go USA Fun Park

If you are searching for some active recreation activities in Murfreesboro, you can find them at Go USA Fun Park. The fun park features a go-kart track, an 18-hole mini golf course, a driving range and batting cages. Inside, there is a also a video arcade with a variety of video games.
