Ashe County is long on both beauty and recreational opportunities because of its location in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are rivers and creeks to canoe, mountains to ski on and hiking trails that range from moderate to highly challenging. Lodging accommodations are plentiful and varied, and include everything from posh resorts to campgrounds. If neither of those extremes are appealing, there are lodges, cabins, inns, bed and breakfasts and hotels to choose from.

Hotels, Motels and Lodges

Best Western Eldreth Inn is on Mount Jefferson, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Jefferson, North Carolina. The hotel offers amenities such as microwaves and satellite cable television with HBO. Nation's Inn in West Jefferson is near Blowing Rock and Boone just off the Blue Ridge Parkway with its renowned scenic vistas. Nation's Inn rooms have wireless Internet, as well as a computer in the lobby with guest access and outside entrances to each room. Bluff's Lodge in Laurel Springs is right on the parkway at mile post 241, and encourages guests to relax on its large patio and outdoor fireplace. Price Lake is close by, offering rentals of row boats and canoes as well as fishing. Nearby Doughton Park offers 7,000 acres and 30 miles of hiking trails, as well as campgrounds, and picnic areas. The park is the habitat of foxes, deer and bobcats.

Cabins

A Cabin on the River, so named because of its location on the historic New River, is equipped with all of the comforts of home--washer and dryer, dishwasher, air conditioning and hot tub--while providing a river view, canoeing and plenty of hiking opportunities along the river in your front yard. Cabins on Laurel Creek in Laurel Springs are air conditioned and have gas log fireplaces for colder months. The creek provides ample recreational opportunities along with the surrounding mountains.

Bed and Breakfast Inns and Resorts

River House Country Inn and Restaurant on the New River's north fork near Boone and West Jefferson is a full-service inn, with rooms that have king-size beds, Jacuzzis, books, art and antiques. Burgiss Farm Bed and Breakfast is a 103-year-old farmhouse that accommodates up to four people just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It sits on 200 acres near the New River and just 20 minutes away from the famed Appalachian Trail. Buffalo Tavern Bed and Breakfast, built in 1872, it sits in a valley near Sugar and Beech Mountains. The decor in each room evokes the era of the tavern's origins, such as the Flapper's Room, and the Madame's Room. Each room has a an antique claw-foot soaking tub big enough for two. Jefferson Landing Resort, on the New River in Jefferson has an 18-hole golf course that is an alternative for those who want a diversion from the rivers, creeks and mountain trails.
