Plentiful wildlife and historical sites like ancient Native American campsites make the surrounding countryside perfect for an all-day hike; after you get back, relax on the porch with a slice of home-baked pie. Rates start at $83 per night. Family packages for up to seven people cost more, but can include a whole level of the building, complete with ping-pong tables, satellite TV and plenty of space for exercising or just getting everyone together.

Baxter House Bed and Breakfast

Southern hospitality has its reputation boosted at Baxter House Bed and Breakfast in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Red Bud Manor Bed and Breakfast

Located in the Victorian town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in the Ozark Mountains, this circa-1891 home surrounds guests with antiques and an airy elegance. The building is perched along the Historic Loop, only a few minutes' stroll from the galleries, shops and restaurants downtown. Pick up a self-guided walking tour booklet and explore the town's hidden walking paths through historic wooded parks and graceful Victorian architecture, or pack up the bikes and take to the trails at nearby Lake Leatherwood. Two rivers, three lakes and a wildlife preserve are within 30 minutes' drive of the B&B, and the town hosts an annual Fat Tire Festival in early summer. Red Bud Manor is open all year, and rates start at $119 per night for a mid-week stay; also available is a carbon-neutral package, which knocks off an extra $20 if you make the trip in a hybrid vehicle. The package includes a donation to an environmental nonprofit and two tickets for the city's trolley system.
