The greater Des Moines area offers more than 100 miles of biking trails, boating on scenic Lake Saylorville, opportunities for horseback riding, and more than 70 park areas. Hotel Fort Des Moines

This historic hotel has been visited by celebrities and luminaries over the decades since it was established in 1919. Charles Lindbergh was famously mobbed by fans in the lobby area of the hotel during his national tour in 1927. Other famous visitors include the Crown Prince and the Princess of Denmark in the 1940s, Spiro Agnew, Walter Mondale and Bob Dole.

The hotel is smoke free, and does not allow pets due to its historic nature. Each guest's room includes a coffee maker, ironing equipment, free Wi-Fi, and use of the penthouse-level spa with a 60-foot indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool and exercise equipment. Suites at the hotel contain all of these amenities, as well as a mini fridge, microwave and sofa. The hotel offers services for business meetings and weddings, as well as catering services.

Renaissance Savery Hotel

Also built in 1919, this historic hotel is now a Marriott property. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Renaissance Savery Hotel has been visited by Woodrow Wilson, Herbert Hoover, and Lady Bird and Lyndon Johnson.

This hotel is also smoke and pet free. Wi-Fi is also available in both public areas and the guest rooms. The hotel offers rooms for visitors of varying budgets, including rooms with two baths, as well as a 4,000-square-foot Penthouse suite. The hotel is 12 stories tall, and offers your choice of 187 rooms and 31 guest suites, as well as various meeting rooms.

Hotel Pattee

Just outside of Des Moines, the historic Hotel Pattee is another option for a traveler looking for an historic place to rest after a long day. The hotel is located near John Wayne's birthplace, the Bridges of Madison County and the Living History Farms.

This boutique hotel offers 40 individually decorated guest rooms, each with a different theme, ranging from a farmhouse-style room to rooms with Japanese and Chinese influences. Some rooms offer spa tubs in addition to a shower, as well as rooms that look out into the sculpture garden. The lower level of the hotel features a bowling alley, and there is also a fitness center on site. Massage services are available upon request.
