Home to the Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee University, Lexington, Virginia is a small city in Rockbridge County. Jefferson National Forest, featuring many hiking and biking paths, lies to the west. One of the most famous attractions in the area, the natural bridge, is located just 20 miles south of the city. If you are looking for luxury accommodations while visiting Lexington's natural wonders, there are a few in the area.

Sheridan Livery Inn

Once home to a stable and carriage service, a steam laundry company and the Old Main Street Indoor Mall, the Sheridan Livery Inn was restored and opened as a hotel in 1997. The smoke-free and pet-free establishment features 12 guests rooms that are each uniquely decorated, three of which are two-room suites. There is a free continental breakfast for all guests, on-site parking and an on-site restaurant that serves a menu of traditional American entrees, such as steak or chicken, salads, soups and sandwiches.

The Sheridan Livery Inn is within walking distance of the Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee University, as well as downtown's multitude of shops and restaurants.

Maple Hall

Maple Hall is an inn housed in a mansion erected in 1850. Each of the inn's 10 guestrooms has its own fireplace and is decorated uniquely with antique furnishings, but include modern amenities, such as in-room temperature control, telephone and cable TV and data ports.

Gardens with verandas surround the Maple Hall property. There is a shaded patio and the porches are furnished with rocking chairs for guest use. Miles of path have been cut into the 56 acres of hills, woods and fields surrounding Maple Hall, and there is even an on-site fish pond stocked with a variety of fish. More modern amenities include a swimming pool and tennis court.

House Mountain Inn

Lexington's House Mountain Inn sits on more that 1,000 acres of woodlands, featuring more than 15 miles of trails that can be used for hiking, horseback riding or biking, and two ponds stocked with bass, trout and catfish. Trail maps are available at the front desk and the innkeepers offer ATV tours of the land.

There are nine guestrooms that include standard hotel amenities, such as satellite TV, CD players, desks and high-speed Internet access, as well as a few extras, like gas fireplaces and either an indoor Jacuzzi or outdoor hot tub. A hot gourmet breakfast is offered for free each morning and the on-site Robert E. Lee Dining Room serves up a three-course dinner each evening.
