Luggage Requirements From Toronto International Flights

Luggage Requirements From Toronto International Flights
Luggage preparation is required to ensure smooth international travel. Most airlines have established certain regulations and standards regarding luggage. If you luggage fails to meet those regulations, you can become subject to additional luggage charges. Additionally, the luggage may be prohibited from travel. To ensure that your luggage is permitted at Toronto Pearson International Airport, familiarize yourself with the luggage requirements.

Carry-On Information

Carry-on luggage must be soft-sided and fit safely in the overhead bin or under the aircraft seats. The carry-on bag must be smaller than 45 inches by 4.5 inches. Acceptable sizes are determined by individual carriers, however. Check with your airline for specific requirements regarding carry-on luggage.

Name Display

All luggage, carry-on bags and laptops must be tagged with your full name and address. The tag must be displayed on the luggage prior to its arrival to the airport. The displayed name must match the name that appears on the flight information. The address listed on the display does not have to match the billing address of the ticket. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) recommends people use their work address. Gift packages must not be wrapped during travel, as they may be subject to security search.

Liquids and gels

Personal items should be packed in your carry-on. Liquids, gels and aerosols in containers that are 100 milliliters (3.4 oz)/100 grams or less must fit in one clear, closed, 1 quart, resealable plastic bag. Only one bag is permitted per traveler. Personal items that are larger than 3.4 oz must be packed in a checked bag and must not constitute a dangerous or prohibited item.

Personal Medication

All personal medications must be professional labeled. The labels must include the name of medication, manufacturer's name or pharmaceutical label. The traveling passenger's name must be on the label and match the name on the ticket or boarding pass. Medications must be packed in a carry-on bag.

Certain prescriptions and essential non-prescription medicines are permitted in sizes larger than 100 ml and are to be carried in your carry-on. These items include baby formula, milk, juice and baby food for traveling infants younger than 24 months. The items must be declared during security screening, removed from the carry-on and placed directly into the bin at the checkpoint.

Permitted vs Non-Permitted Items

Beverages purchased outside of the checkpoint are not permitted in carry-on luggage. This includes sealed items brought from home. These items must be packed in a checked bag. Additionally, if the items are larger than 100 ml, the items must be declared at check-in. Alcohol may be transported in checked luggage but may not exceed 70 percent alcohol by volume.
Most tools, knives and scissors are prohibited in carry-on bags. However, some items are permitted in checked bags and must be declared. All incapacitating sprays, liquids and powders are prohibited in all carry-on and checked bags. This includes mace and pepper spray which are illegal and could result in arrest. All firearms must be declared and carried only in checked luggage. This includes toy weapons, water guns, squirt guns and transformer robots that convert into toy gun form.
