Famous Bars in Portland, ME

Famous Bars in Portland, ME
Portland, Maine, is one of those undiscovered gems. Lying on the Atlantic coast in the northeast United States, Portland offers outdoor activity and adventure at every turn. Whether you want to spend a slow day at the beach, surf the waves in a kayak or take a boat tour of the historic islands, Portland offers it. And when you're done, there's some famous and historic bars in town that will allow you to extend the memories.

The Great Lost Bear

A Portland mainstay for locals since 1979, The Great Lost Bear is not just a bar but a restaurant and brew pub as well. If it's a cold one you're looking for, The Great Lost Bear features over 60 taps of microbrewery beer from around the state of Maine as well as all the old standby major brewery beers. "Forbes Traveler" liked the selection so much that The Great Lost Bear was picked as one of the top 10 beer bars in the nation, and "All About Beer" magazine selected the bar as one of their 125 places to have a beer before you die.

Bull Feeney's

The Feeney name is almost synonymous with the Portland bar scene. The original Feeney's saloon was opened way back in the 1800s as a grocery store. John Feeney wanted to have a saloon but he used the grocery store as a front at the beginning. He would later open up four more saloons in the area. Bull Feeney's is named after John's son, who was a great fullback for Portland High School. Like The Great Lost Bear, Bull Feeney's also has a wealth of beers on tap (over 50). If you're in the mood for some live music, Bull Feeney's offers local acts and open mic nights throughout the week.

Dry Dock Restaurant and Tavern

The Dry Dock is the kind of place you would expect in a salty old port city. It's on the waterfront, and it packs in the locals both day and night. The establishment is actually divided into two floors, with the basement serving as the tavern and the upstairs working to supply hungry travelers with a meal. The food is OK but there are better restaurants in the Portland waterfront area. The real draw is the seaside tavern experience, which is a great way to get the local flavor of the area and its inhabitants.
