West Virginia has 35 public airports but only seven offer commercial airline service. Continental Connection, Delta Connection, Northwest Airlines, United Express and US Airways Express all fly into West Virginia. At each of these airports, you can rent a car or take other transportation to resorts and outdoor destinations. West Virginia borders Maryland and Virginia, and these two states have airports a short drive from West Virginia's outdoor activities. West Virginia is known as the "outdoor capital of the East," offering whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, horseback riding, skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, camping, geocaching, rock climbing, caving and golf.

South West Virginia Airports with Commercial Airline Service

Raleigh County Memorial Airport is situated in Beckley County in south West Virginia's New River Gorge region. You can fly to this airport on United Express from Washington, D.C.-Dulles Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). LocAir, an air taxi airline and charter airline, flies to Lake Cumberland/Somerset, Kentucky. Charter flights are also available through third parties whose information is on the airport website. Beckley offers many rock climbing, caving/spelunking, horseback riding and hiking adventures both along the New and Gauly Rivers and in nearby national parks. The New and Gauly Rivers provide great whitewater rafting and kayaking for both beginners and experts. For kayakers, Glade Creek, Marsh Fork of Big Coal River and Peachtree Creek offer challenging runs.

Greenbriar Valley Airport is in the southern portion of the state in the city of Lewisburg. Only Continental serves this airport. Nearby Snowshoe Mountain Resort and Glade Springs Resort offer year-round outdoor activities such as skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, golf and whitewater rafting.

Central West Virginia Airports with Commercial Airline Service

Charleston/Yeager Airport, located in the capital of West Virginia, has nonstop flights to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago-O'Hare, Cincinnati, Detroit, Houston, Orlando, New York (La Guardia), Washington-Dulles Airport and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport. AirTran, American, Delta Airlines, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways all fly into Charleston. Charleston provides rafting, horseback riding, golf and skiing. Snowshoe Mountain and Glade Springs are within 100 miles of the airport.

Huntington/Tri-State Airport is in the westernmost county of West Virginia, Wayne County. Allegiant Air, Delta and US Airways fly nonstop from Huntington to Charlotte, Cincinnati, Fort Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach, Orlando and Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg. Huntington is surrounded by state parks that offer cabins, hiking trails, campsites and lakes for waterskiing. The Huntington area also has some of the best golf courses in the state.

North West Virginia Airports with Commercial Service

The North Central West Virginia Airport (formerly the Clarksburg/Harrison-Marion Airport) has six flights daily on United Express to Washington-Dulles Airport. While in Bridgeport, paddle down the Buckhannon and Tygart Valley rivers or the Middle Fork River for a more challenging whitewater experience. You can play golf or hike the North Bend Rail-Trail, West Virginia's part of the American Discovery Trail.

Morgantown Municipal Airport hosts daily United Express flights to Washington-Dulles Airport. You can play golf, kayak the Monongahela or hike the Allegheny Trail.

Airports Near Eastern West Virginia with Commercial Service

There are no airports with commercial airline flights in the eastern portion of the state. But, you can get to the Appalachian Trail in Harpers Ferry at the easternmost section of West Virginia. Fly into BWI Airport in Maryland, Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., or Washington-Dulles Airport in Virginia then rent a car for the 1- to 2-hour trip to Harper's Ferry.
