The Best GPS Units for Hiking

The Best GPS Units for Hiking
GPS units for hiking are hand held, portable receivers used for pinpointing specific locations on trails and in the back country. Global positioning systems operate by receiving the navigational beams from orbiting GPS satellites. The units typically use the positioning of several satellites to determine location within a few feet. There are a wide variety of GPS units on the market from various manufacturers. However, there are a few units in particular from the Garmin company which are stand outs in the outdoor world and have features which make them some of the best available.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx

Rugged, water proof, and reliable are just some of the words which best describe the GPSMAP 60CSx by the Garmin company. This system has proven reliable as a navigation aid on both land and water. Thanks to an SD card slot, the unit can be easily uploaded with a variety of navigation maps, enabling the traveler to keep up to date mapping information at hand. This model is an upgrade and allows for faster acquisition of GPS satellites, even under thick and dense foliage. This Garmin model is considered by many outdoor enthusiasts as the standard by which other units are measured. The 60CSx features a large color display, built-in helix antenna with an additional jack for an external antenna, programmable audio alarms, elevation calculator, and even step-by-step highway navigation.

Garmin 76CSx

The Garmin 76CSx is a sleek GPS unit which features an internal antenna. Preferred by many to those units which have protruding antenna assemblies, the 76CSx features a full color display and easy-to-use controls. The unit is waterproof and is touted by Garmin to float when dropped in water. Features of the unit include helix receiving antenna, audible alarms, trip computer, turn by turn highway navigation, and lunar tables which are useful by hunters and fishermen.

Garmin Colorado 400t

The Garmin Colorado 400t brings the added dimension of 3-D display to the world of GPS navigation. Featuring preloaded navigation maps, the unit provides shading which presents a 3-D rendering of the terrain. This feature is especially useful for hiking and mountaineering. Other features of the 400t include the ability to wirelessly share way points and routes with other 400t users, a built-in electronic compass, and preloaded navigation SD cards. This model is operated by means of a single easy-to-use wheel located at the top of the unit. The 400t also supports direct downloads from Geocaching.com for GPX files containing information on clues and directions.
