La Brea Tar Pits
The La Brea Tar Pits are located slightly north of downtown Los Angeles, but it is worth the trip to travel north a few streets to see this natural phenomenon. Natural asphalt bubbles up to the surface at the location, and has trapped and preserved thousands of prehistoric animals. The La Brea Tar Pits are free to view (and smell), but the fairly priced museum adjacent to the Tar Pits is well worth the cash.

U.S. Bank Tower
The U.S. Bank Tower, which was first called the Library Tower and then the First Interstate Bank World Center, is not only the tallest building in Los Angeles, it is the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. Although the inside of the building houses offices and is not very exciting, the U.S. Bank Tower features an observation deck with spectacular views of all of Los Angeles.

Richard Riordan Central Library
The Richard Riordan Central Library, part of the Los Angeles Public Library, has the third-largest library book collection in the United States. The library was subject to a debilitating fire in 1986, which destroyed a vast amount of the collection. The library was renovated in 1993, and has murals, chandeliers and an ancient Egyptian theme.
