When thinking of a relaxing retreat, weary souls conjure up images of white sand beaches, azure waters, tropical breezes and scenic landscapes. For water enthusiasts, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling or diving in pristine waters to explore coral gardens and caves are solutions to a stress-free escape. Hiking in rainforests, rock climbing, mountain biking and camping by the beach are ideal for outdoor lovers. But often, the cost of a tropical vacation is enough to cause anxiety. Thankfully there are budget-friendly options.

Belize

A two-hour plane ride away from the United States, Belize is a tropical paradise on the Caribbean coast of Central America. A diverse range of awe-inspiring adventures awaits visitors, including expeditions exploring ancient Mayan temples, guided river kayaking trips, or diving and snorkeling on one of the longest barrier reefs in the Western Hemisphere. Guided treks in its verdant rainforests offer opportunities to spot exotic birds and vegetation. As of September 2009, budget-friendly accommodations start at $30, some with shared bathrooms and no air conditioning.

Americans wishing for a tropical vacation without the troubles of visas or passports can visit Puerto Rico where such travel documents aren't required for entry from the United States. Puerto Rico, the Island of Enchantment, offers mainlanders an array of attractions and activities. A hike through the El Yunque National Rainforest provides close observation of the rich ecological biodiversity. Surfing is possible in almost all parts of the island, especially Rincon, which has hosted numerous competitions. Desecheo Island off Rincon, Mona Island, Culebra and Vieques offer the best dives. The shallow reefs near San Juan, Dorado, Mayaguez and Humacao are perfect for snorkeling. Kayaking, spelunking, mountain biking, rock climbing and camping on deserted islands are ideal for adventure seekers. As of September 2009, accommodations start at $60 for two people per night.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands is a tropical haven offering some of the finest white sand beaches in the world'perfect for surfing, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing and kayaking. On shore, beachgoers can gaze at the blue horizon and relax under tall coconut trees. Exploring historic St. Thomas is possible via guided bicycle tours that start with a ferry ride to Water Island. The rides are on paved and dirt roads with some single track. Riders conclude with a swim and free juice and a return trip on the ferry. A "sag wagon" carrying patrons' personal items accompanies the tour. A Cannondale mountain bike, a helmet and a water bottle are provided. As of September 2009, a three- or four-night stay for two at budget-friendly tent-cottages on Water Island start at $129 a night.
