In central California, most bluegill fishing locations are open year-round. There is also no limit for the daily amount of bluegill you can catch in California. There is no need for expensive fishing equipment when you are looking to catch bluegill, as they have been known to be caught with a simple stick, string and hook.

Lake McClure is 40 miles east of Modesto in Snelling. Park fees are $6 per vehicle, motorcycle and boat, $5 for senior citizens 62 and older and $4 for pets. Reservations can be made Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at (800) 468 8889.

New Melones Lake is 19.5 miles away from San Andreas. Day fee is $6 per person and boat docking fee is $8 per day. Fishing is available year-round and park hours are:
Oct. 1-Nov. 8: close 10 p.m.; open 4 a.m.
Nov. 2-March 7: close 9 p.m.; open 4 a.m.
March 8-April 31: close 10 p.m.; open 4 a.m.
May 1-Sept. 30: close 11 p.m.; open 4 a.m.

Lake Nacimiento is 46 miles north of San Luis Obispo. Summer rates run from March 1 to Oct. 31 and are as follows: day use north shore is $12; day use south shore is $15; dogs $10; and, dogs with seniors (anyone 60 years of age or older) $3. Winter rates run from Nov. 1 to 28 and are the same except during the winter, south shore fishing is $10 and the north shore is closed.
