After a day of hiking or biking in Central Park, you'll be ready for dinner in New York City. Though you can always opt for a low-cost meal at one of the many ethnic or American food restaurants, nothing compares to dressing up and catching a cab to one of the city's famous restaurants. You're likely to see some celebrities and you'll never forget the experience of eating beautifully executed gourmet food.

Sardi's

Sardi's is a Broadway theater district institution in New York City. Long a favorite of celebrities, the restaurant honors many of them with caricatures on its "Wall of Fame." Vincent Sardi founded the eating establishment in 1921. He died in 2007; his grandson, Sean Ricketts, now manages it. Ricketts said, "We occasionally have special events in conjunction with Broadway events, such as the Broadway flea market and new show openings." Sardi's serves beautifully executed American continental cuisine that tempts the palate for lunch and dinner every day except Monday. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays feature a business lunch special that includes choice of appetizer or dessert, entrée and coffee. The restaurant sells gift items such as windbreakers, ashtrays, sweaters, mugs, baseball caps and prints by Richard Baratz.

The Four Seasons

In 2007, Town and Country Magazine named The Four Seasons its "Favorite Restaurant in the World." The Pool Room has a marble pool and trees that change with the seasons. The Grill Room features French walnut wall panels and two-story windows. The three other dining rooms are the Pool Room Terrace, the James Beard Room and the Frank Stella Room. Thousands of brass bars hang from the ceiling in the bar. The art collection is exquisite and includes Picasso paintings, Roy Lichtenstein lithographs and Juan Miro tapestries, among others. You can tour the restaurant on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. The Four Seasons hosts parties and events throughout the year. You can sign up to receive invitations to them on their website (fourseasons.com). Try scrumptious appetizers such as ceviche, pumpkin ravioli and spicy conch chowder. Men must wear jackets to The Four Seasons; if you don't wear one, the restaurant will lend you a jacket in sizes 38 to 52. The restaurant is open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner Monday through Saturday.
