Cheap Hostels in Marebbe, Italy

Cheap Hostels in Marebbe, Italy

Hubert Berberich

Positioned near the borders of Switzerland and Slovenia, Marebbe is the destination for those travelers seeking to visit the rougher, more jagged mountain terrain in Italy. While plentiful in expensive hotel options and the more outdoor-oriented "campeggios," Marebbe's tiny size makes its hostel selection minimal to nonexistent. For those backpackers and budget travelers in search for the best deals on accommodation, a small train ride quickly bridges the gap to nearby hostel-hubs such as Bolzano and Merano, which can generate savings of 60 euros or more compared to the tariffs of local "albhergi." All the the prices quoted below are current as of September 2009.

Youth Hostel Bolzano

The closest bed to Marebbe at a reasonable rate can be found at the newly renovated and ultra-modern Youth Hostel Bolzano, where individual rooms start at 15 euro per person at mid-season rates, and raise only to the 22-euro mark during summer. Providing a total of 28 rooms, with no dorm exceeding four beds, Youth Hostel Bolzano offers free lockers, linens and wireless Internet, as well as an included breakfast. One noteworthy perk includes the newly renovated kitchen: a facility any budget traveler will appreciate when it comes to cutting meal costs.

Hostel Cappello di Ferro

Next up in price, the Hostel Cappello di Ferro averages 25 to 30 euros for its dorm and private rooms, depending on the season and weekend rates. Though costlier than the Youth Hostel, Cappello provides a full buffet for breakfast and free parking for those intrepid travelers who happen to be touring the Alps by car. One of the key benefits of this hostel is the in-house bar and café, where travelers can sit for a cool drink while meeting any one of the 60 travelers the Hostel Cappello di Ferro puts up each night.

Hostel Westend

A slightly farther trek from Marebbe, but making up for it in sheer luxury, the Hostel Westend offers rates at 37 euros per person on the mid-season. Book in advance for this popular hostel, however, as weekend rates can hike considerably in the summer, nearing the 50-euro mark. Offering the usual breakfast, bar and Internet amenities, the Hostel Westend also provides room service, airport transfers, TV, free parking and an elevator (one of those rare luxuries when staying in hostels). Boasting a quiet and elegant atmosphere, the Hostel Westend overlooks the Swiss Alps.
