The small town of Carlisle--population 19,000--is situated in south central Pennsylvania, near the capital city of Harrisburg. Carlisle boasts a well-preserved and lively downtown and easy access to outstanding recreational opportunities. The ridges of the Alleghany mountains offer several state parks, and the Appalachian Trail winds its way along the nearby ridges on its way to Maine. Counterpoint to the mountains is the rolling Cumberland Valley, bisected by the Susquehanna River, and offering a rail trail and several first-class birding areas.

Jacob's Resting Place

There's a lot of history in this region of Pennsylvania, and you can soak up some of that by staying Jacob's Resting Place. This historic property was built in 1790 and sits on the edge of Carlise on a scenic trout stream. The landscaping is an attraction in and of itself, with formal gardens and an impressive collection of mature trees.

You won't give up the perks of modern living, though. Each room has a whirlpool tub and there's a large pool situated on a lovely limestone terrace. Rooms feature data links and cable TV.
