Paris is full of history, romance and art. It also has many hotels that are steeped in rich history and luxurious design. In these landmark establishments, artists, actors and royalty slept, ate and sometimes died. Not for the faint of heart or budget-conscious, these hotels have a reputation for catering to the best clientele by offering world-class service and amenities. These are hotels for the truly selective and curious.

Hotel Regina Paris

Situated near the famed Louvre Museum, the Hotel Regina counts Matt Damon and Jet Li among its past guests. Behind the historical facade, the interior is decorated in the Belle Epoque style with original artwork, luxury fabrics and antique furniture. Open since the 1900 World's Fair, "the Second Empire building that is home to the hotel was constructed on the site of the Louvre Palace's royal riding stables," according to the hotel's website.

L'Hotel

L'Hotel is not just a hotel, but also a tourist destination. According to Prestigia travel services, "The iconic L'Hôtel was originally part of the palace of Queen Margot before being transformed into a Pavilion d'Amour (a pavilion of love) in the early 19th century." Famed author Oscar Wilde spent the last days of his life at L'Hotel in one of the uniquely decorated rooms. Now redecorated and named the world's best urban hotel by Harper's Bazaar in 2008, L'Hotel has become a mix of both the modern and traditional. Chef Philippe Belissent's Le Restaurant has earned one Michelin star, with reservations booked several months in advance.

This is the preeminent artsy hotel of Paris. According to the hotel's history, "the Plaza Athénée opened at the same time as the nearby Theatre des Champs Elysées: the hotel soon became the gathering place for the most prominent composers and performers of the day." Throughout history, prominent actors and personalities have stopped by to partake of the hotel's numerous attractions, including Josephine Baker, Gary Cooper and Jackie Onassis Kennedy. Refurbished and updated, the Plaza Athenee is still a go-to stop for the young, hip and creatively inclined.
