Coleman Lantern Lighting Instructions

Coleman Lantern Lighting Instructions
Coleman lanterns have been a popular choice of alternative lighting since their introduction more than 100 years ago. They can be used to light campsites, outdoor activities or used in an emergency when there is a loss of power. Offered in many configurations and styles, lighting instructions for Coleman lanterns can vary, depending on fuel type. Operation of these lanterns, especially those using kerosene or other liquid fuels, should be undertaken with a great deal of caution to prevent fire or injury to the user.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Coleman lantern
  • Appropriate fuel or batteries
  • Matches or lighter
  • Fire extinguisher (optional)
Step 1
Verify the fuel source before attempting to light the lantern. Doing so will help prevent damage to the lantern, poor operation or even injury to the user.

For battery-operated models, verify that the batteries are fresh and free from corrosion or damage. Check the battery compartment for rust, corrosion or damage to the wiring or other parts. Replace any batteries or parts necessary.

For liquid fuel models, the best way to verify that the lantern is using the correct fuel is to fill it with fresh fuel before each use. Draining and replacing any questionable fuel will help to prevent damage to the lantern or unexpected results during use.

Propane bottles should be clean, free of dirt and undamaged to provide safe operation.
Step 2
Place the lantern in a safe and appropriate area. Although this isn't an issue for battery-operated models, lanterns that use kerosene or other liquid fuel should never be lit inside a home or tent and should never be operated near any flammable material.
Step 3
For Coleman fuel-burning lanterns, push a lit match through the lighting hole and turn the adjustment knob to high. Remove the match once the mantel is burning. Open the pump knob and pump approximately 20 times and then close the knob. Adjust flame to desired level.
Step 4
For Coleman kerosene fuel lanterns, open the pump knob and pump approximately 30 times and then close the knob. Fill the pre-heater cup with alcohol and ignite by pushing a lit match through the lighting hole. Once the alcohol is nearly consumed, turn the adjustment valve to the desired level.
Step 5
For propane-fueled Coleman lanterns, turn the adjustment knob to full on, which should produce a spark from the Insta-Start Electronic Ignition system, thereby lighting the mantel. Adjust the brightness by turn the fuel level knob to the desired setting.

Tips & Warnings

Clean, fresh fuel is the primary key to getting the best from a Coleman lantern.

Propane can be purchased in small containers, which are perfect for backpacking or hiking trips.

On liquid fuel models, replace the mantels regularly to get the best possible light.

Never use a liquid fuel lantern indoors or inside a tent, as they consume oxygen and produce carbon monoxide, which can be harmful or fatal.

Keep open flames away from sleeping bags, tents or other camping gear.
