How to Make Reservations for a Sleeper Car on Amtrak

How to Make Reservations for a Sleeper Car on Amtrak
Trains are often more convenient than planes for outdoor travelers, since they make stops at remote destinations far from the big airports. Unfortunately, the long rides can make them feel even more uncomfortable than airplanes. Why not combine the convenience of a train with the comfort of a sleeper car! Riding in a sleeper will let you enjoy the scenic beauty of your ride or just lie back and read a good book. You will arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to continue your adventure.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Check to see if you get discounts. Amtrak gives discounts to children and infants, veterans, senior citizens, students, AAA members and members of the National Association of Railroad Passengers (NARP).
Step 2
Go to the Amtrak website and enter your departure and return information. Select which station you are leaving and arriving at and what dates you want to travel on. Alternately, you can call 1-800-USA-RAIL and book your reservation through an automated phone system.
Step 3
Select the train you want to ride on from the list provided by the website. Click on the button that says "view upgrade options" and select "sleeper." You can choose from "superliner roomette" which is a small sleeper for two people, "family bedroom" which is a full bedroom with two extra cots for children," or "bedroom" which is like a family bedroom without the extra cots. If you are reserving your ticket over the phone, choose "sleeper" when the automated system asks you what type of seat you want. You will then be able to choose the type of sleeper.
Step 4
Buy your tickets at the Amtrak station if you prefer. The ticket agent will be able to book a sleeper car for you if any are available.

Tips & Warnings

Amtrak weekly specials are not available on sleeper cars. Book your sleeper well in advance; otherwise, there may not be one available.
