Performing regular maintenance on your Shakespeare fishing reel will keep it in working order every time you go fishing. As with any reel, if it is properly maintained the reel will give you years of problem-free fishing. Maintaining and cleaning your Shakespeare fishing reel is not that hard to do and you probably have all the supplies you need at home. The next time you are reeling in that big fish and your reel does not mess up, you will be thanking yourself you took the extra steps in reel care.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Mild dishwashing detergent Soft cloth Towel Small dish Three-in-one oil Sewing machine oil Screwdriver Water Fishing line
  • Mild dishwashing detergent
  • Soft cloth
  • Towel
  • Small dish
  • Three-in-one oil
  • Sewing machine oil
  • Screwdriver
  • Water
  • Fishing line
Step 1
Wash the reel off with freshwater as soon as you get home from fishing, if it has been dropped into the sand or dirt. Leaving sand in your reel can stop it from working properly.
Step 2
Set up your area to clean and lubricate your reel. Make sure the area is clean and clear of other items that may get mixed in with screws and other parts from your reel. Use a small dish to place items from your reel into so they do not get lost. Do your work on a clean towel.
Step 3
Remove the line from the reel and wash the spool in mild dishwashing detergent. Wash the remainder of the reel, too. Dry all parts thoroughly with a dry, soft cloth.
Step 4
Use three-in-one oil to lubricate all moving parts of the bail assembly as well as the handle itself. Put lubricant on the line roller and main shaft. Use sewing machine oil, if you do not have three-in-one oil. It will work just as well.
Step 5
Once a year, remove the handle from the reel as well as the side plates for general cleaning and maintenance. Wash these parts in hot water. Dry with a soft cloth. Lubricate all the internal moving parts such as the gears and bearings.
Step 6
Place new line on the reel after it has been cleaned and lubricated. Your reel is now ready to be replaced back on the fishing pole, and you're ready to go fishing.

Tips & Warnings

Always make sure all the exposed screws and nuts on the reel are tightened before you go fishing. Also be sure to check that the handle is screwed tightly to the reel. Always replace the line on your reel with new at least once every year. The line will develop memory and will tangle, and you won't be able to cast as far. Always save the parts list that came with your reel so you will be able to order new parts if something breaks.
