How to Fit a Dog Backpack

How to Fit a Dog Backpack

When camping with man's best friend, you may want him (or her) to carry a share of the weight. This means having the dog carry their portable water dish or other small objects. To accomplish this you will need a dog backpack, which is a small pack that straps around the dog. Before you head out on your hike or camping trip you will want to fit your dog for the pack, to make sure they are comfortable yet capable of carrying the pack without it falling off.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Tape measure
  • Dog backpack
Step 1
Measure the circumference of your dog's chest before purchasing the dog backpack. Most of these packs will have a specific chest size on the label.
Step 2
Place the middle of the backpack on your dog's back. The straps will fit around the waist and chest of the dog.
Step 3
Clamp the plastic clamp, which looks similar to a small seatbelt, in the middle of the dog's chest. Make sure there is no fur caught in the clamp. Adjust the strap coming out of the plastic clamp to tighten the backpack. Pull the strap until you can snugly fit your pinkie in between your dog's chest and the clamp. This will allow enough room for the dog the move and breathe, all while keeping the pack from slipping off.
Step 4
Repeat step three with the bottom strap and clamp that goes around the lower part of the dog.
Step 5
Add the objects you want your dog to carry, making sure the pack is not too heavy (only include the light objects, such as their poop bags). Do not put food in the pack because this will drive them nuts the entire walk.
