How to Install an Auto GPS

Global positioning system (GPS) units are popular aides for automobile navigation. You can use a GPS unit not only to find where you are going, but also to estimate the time it will take to get there and the fuel cost of doing so. Most auto GPS units install onto the dashboard or front windshield, making it easier for the driver to glance at the screen while driving.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step 1
Plug your GPS unit into your computer, if possible, or connect via satellite to complete the product registration. You must do this for most models to enjoy the full range of features on your GPS.
Step 2
Attach the base of the GPS mount to either the windshield or dashboard. Read the instructions to find out where it should be installed. You will either use suction cups or a sticky pad to anchor the mount base.
Step 3
Connect the remaining parts, if any, making sure the GPS unit holder is pointed towards the driver.
Step 4
Plug the GPS unit's power cord into your car outlet and connect it to the GPS unit.
Step 5
Snap the GPS unit into its holder. Adjust the holder, if needed, to get the best view of your auto GPS.

Tips & Warnings

Make sure the GPS's volume is high enough that you can hear it while driving. It is dangerous to repeatedly look at your GPS screen while driving.
