Handheld global positioning system (GPS) devices are popular accessories among hikers and backpackers. Satellite maps and orientation decreases the likelihood of getting lost while making it easier to explore unfamiliar territory. But a handheld GPS can be also be costly. Before purchasing a device, learn more about these units and the options available so you get the right one for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step 1
Decide how important maps are. GPS devices that use only coordinates without maps are much cheaper, but if you need to know what kind of terrain surrounds you or plan to navigate roads, you will likely need maps.
Step 2
Take size and durability into consideration. Smaller devices tend to be more popular, but they also cost more. Multi-day hikers may want to make this investment to keep their pack weight low. Also decide if you want or need a waterproof or water-resistant device.
Step 3
Choose only from GPS units that use multi-parallel channels. This means your GPS system orients itself according to multiple satellites rather than just one, ensuring greater accuracy and a more reliable signal.
Step 4
Take battery life into consideration. If you plan to use your unit for multi-day treks, you will need a long battery life. You may want to consider purchasing a spare battery for longer trips.
Step 5
Decide how much memory you need on your GPS system to store routes and markers. This feature is not vital, but it makes using your GPS easier if you will need to navigate along the same routes or toward the same locations regularly.
