Homemade Fish Bait Recipes

No matter what type of fishing you are doing, you are going to need bait if you want to catch a fish. There are dozens of types of bait you can use, but if you are feeling a bit creative---make your own. It might be a stinky job, but it is relatively easy to do. There are a bunch of homemade bait recipes you can use, but the one listed is easy and good for catching catfish.

Instructions

Leather Liver Catfish Bait

Things You’ll Need:
  • 2 pounds chicken liver 32 oz. Garlic Salt Cookie Sheet Container with lid
  • 2 pounds chicken liver
  • 32 oz. Garlic Salt
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Container with lid
Step 1
Purchase two pounds of chicken livers and a 32 ounce container of garlic salt. Make sure you buy garlic salt and not pure garlic without salt. The salt is necessary to the curing process.
Step 2
Lay a layer of chicken livers on the cookie sheet and sprinkle a large amount of garlic salt on them.
Step 3
Continue layering the livers on top of each other and sprinkling with garlic salt until you have used all of the chicken livers.
Step 4
Set the pan outside for several hours. It is not necessary for the pan to be placed in the sun.
Step 5
Dump the liver and garlic salt mixture into a large container that has a lid.
Step 6
Stir the liver mixture, adding more garlic salt while your stir. Continue stirring the mixture until you have used all but 1/4 cup of the garlic salt. Save the remaining garlic salt for later.
Step 7
Place the covered container in the garage and allow it to ferment for at least 10 days.
Step 8
When you are ready to use the bait and go fishing, open the container and stir in the remaining garlic salt, .

Tips & Warnings

 
Add any spice you'd like to the mixture, but add plenty of salt to make the bait tougher. This bait will stick to a single wire hook.
