  • Replacement buckle
  • Large sewing needle
  • Heavy-duty cotton thread
  • Small pliers
Step 1
Find a replacement buckle that matches up with the original. Using a buckle that is similar in size will ensure sturdiness. Replacement plastic buckles can be found at outdoor retailers.
Step 2
Cut the stitches in the webbing by carefully using a seam ripper or small pliers. Be careful not to cut the fabric of backpack strap.
Step 3
Thread the replacement buckle through the strap and fold the remaining webbing over onto itself.
Step 4
Sew around the outside perimeter of the layered webbing to create a rectangle. Once you have secured the edges connect the corners by creating an "X" inside the rectangle. Secure the ends of the threads by tying a knot and cutting off the tail.
