Saltwater fishing rods are available in a variety of sizes and types. When purchasing a new saltwater fishing rod, think about the type of fishing you'll be doing and the type of fish species you want to catch. This will help you to choose the best saltwater fishing rod for your needs. As with any type of fishing tackle purchase, check your rod by hand and look for competitive pricing among a variety of manufacturers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Compare by type. A fly rod, which is constructed from fiberglass, carbon/graphite or graphite/baron composites, is specifically designed for fly fishing. Rig with a fishing fly and cast using a quick cast-and-retrieval pattern across shallow water.
Step 2
Investigate other saltwater varieties such as spin casting and bait casting rods. Opt for a bait casting rod when fishing, for example, a top water plug. The rod's shorter length and stronger backbone permit greater wrist control so you can walk your bait along the surface of the water. Spin casting rods are ideal for light tackle action.
Step 3
Factor in water conditions. Opt for a carbon fiber pole, which is crafted using varying carbon fibers, when fishing in heavy, coarse waters. A spin casting or bait casting reel is more suited for standard saltwater fishing applications.
Step 4
Check the collapsed length as well as the extended length before making a purchase. Compare by length. Saltwater fishing rod lengths vary, so choose a rod length that is right for the water depth you will be fishing. For example, opt for a medium action, 9- to 10-inch telescoping rod and spinning reel combination for large saltwater game fish. Find rod specifications on the rod or contact the manufacturer for rod length details.
Step 5
Check the weight rating of the rod, which is normally available on the original package. Look for a specific weight rating, such as 10 pounds, which describes the exact maximum weight capacity your saltwater fishing rod can handle.
