Ontario is smallmouth bass country. Anglers yearning to feel the fight that these bronze-backed fish produce will discover large populations in rivers and lakes throughout the province, from the St. Lawrence north to Hudson Bay. Noted for its red eyes, this member of the sunfish family has a short, burly appearance and is quite different from its largemouth and spotted cousins. Before making your first cast, taking some time to consider a few tips may mean less frustration and possibly a tasty dinner.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1
Choose the best rig when fishing for smallmouth bass with live bait. Select a 6- to 8-foot ultra-light or light action rod and matching spinning reel, as smallmouth bass rarely exceed 3 pounds. Cover for the occasional trophy size fish by using 6- to 8-lb. test.
Step 2
Select the best rig when fishing for smallmouth bass with lures. Choose a 6- to 7-foot medium-action rod and matching spinning reel for a quick hook set. Use 6- to 8-lb. test.
Step 3
Pick a clear line that offers some resistance to abrasion, as smallmouth bass fishing often means sharp rocks that can cut lines after a hook is set.
Step 4
Use bait that mimics smallmouth bass eating habits. Attach lures or use live bait--such as worms, leeches, minnows, crayfish or insects--anything that might be found on the surface and bottom, as these fish feed in both areas. Vary colors between natural crayfish and worm tones as well as neon green and pink. Cast using crankbaits or jigs alternatively.
Step 5
Keep a few deep diving lures as part of your arsenal since smallmouth bass move to depth during certain months.
Step 6
Seek out smallmouth bass in the favored habitat of cool, clear water near rocky ledges, points and sunken shoals in lakes or rivers. Avoid areas of dense vegetation unless casting for largemouth bass.
Step 7
Learn where this fish moves seasonally for best results. Cast out over shallow rocky areas during the spring, especially during the spawning period. Cast toward both the surface and down to 30 feet during the summer. Cast away from shore to a depth of 15 to 30 feet during the fall.
Step 8
Cast in the same area if you just reeled in a large fish, because smallmouth bass generally travel in schools of similarly sized fish.
Step 9
Fish in lakes, rivers and streams throughout Ontario as this fish is a native.
