Floats are useful for anglers who want to suspend a baitfish or piece of cutbait at a predetermined depth. By watching the float, the angler can tell when a fish has taken the bait.

Pick a float that is large enough so the bait cannot pull it under for long periods of time. There are many different styles of floats available for the angler. This article details the commonly used peg float.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Float with peg
  • Hook and leader rig
  • Pliers
  • Barrel swivel
  • Split shot
Step 1
Remove the peg from the float. Thread the fishing line through the hole in the center of the cork.
Step 2
Attach the fishing line to the hook and leader with a barrel swivel. Insert the peg into the float body at the desired depth.
Step 3
Crimp a small split shot to the leader to keep the float upright. Check the peg every five to six casts to ensure it is still tight in the float body.
