The Daiwa brand is well known and respected among many anglers and is commonly associated with quality and reliable freshwater reels. From the baitcast model Hyper Speed to the spinning model Opus Bull, Daiwa reels are designed to be efficient and easy to use. Periodic cleaning is essential to ensure that the reels continue to operate as designed. Basic cleaning is a simple process that all anglers should understand and perform on a routine basis.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Running water from a faucet
  • Can of compressed air
  • Clean rags
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Cotton swabs
  • Reel oil
Step 1
Turn on a sink faucet so that there is a steady stream of water. Rinse the reel completely to remove any debris or dirt from the surface. Place the reel on a towel spread out on a work surface.
Step 2
Place a direction nozzle on a can of compressed air. Use the compressed air to dry the Daiwa reel and remove any remaining debris. Use a soft bristle brush if necessary to scrub and remove stubborn debris.
Step 3
Remove the spool from your Daiwa freshwater reel. Remove the front drag control knob on a spinning reel or open the side access panel on a baitcast reel. Pull the spool from the reel and examine it for damage, debris or accumulations of grease or oil. Replace the spool if damaged and remove debris with compressed air, a soft bristle brush or a rag.
Step 4
Clean the line guide on a Daiwa baitcast reel or the line roller on a spinning reel with a soft bristle brush. Remove accumulations of debris such as pond scum. Place a drop of oil on the bail wire pivot points on a spinning reel and on the line guide of a baitcast reel.
Step 5
Apply reel oil to connection points on the body of the reel and place the spool back onto the reel and secure by closing the access or installing the drag control, depending on the model of reel.
Step 6
Carefully examine the exterior of the reel for any damage. Apply a drop of oil to the base of the handle and the grip. Wipe down the entire exterior of the reel with oil to displace moisture and prevent corrosion.

Tips & Warnings

It is not necessary to access, inspect and clean the internal gearing of a Daiwa baitcast reel during each routine cleaning. Do not open the body of the reel unless you are confident in how to clean it.
