Fishing floats are used to keep the lure at a particular depth in the water. Floats aid the angler at times of day when certain fish are known to be found at a certain depth. Making your own floats can be a fun project for you or to get your kids involved in fishing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Small wooden balls
  • Red and white spray paint
  • Tape
  • Paint brush
Step 1
Drill a hole in the middle of a small wooden ball. You can find these at craft supply stores. In some cases, you can find balls with holes pre-drilled.
Step 2
Tape off half of the ball, and spray the other half with a red latex paint. Wait for it to dry, and then remove the tape.
Step 3
Hand paint the other side of the ball with white paint. You have to hand-paint the white because you cannot tape over the red paint because it might peel off when you remove the tape. Let the paint dry.
Step 4
Slip fishing line through the hole in the middle of the float. Crimp a small weight on either side of the float once you have it where you want it on your line. The weights will be too small to pull the float down and will keep the float in place on the line.
