Fishing line is an important component in the overall setup of a rod and reel. Preparing fishing line involves attaching the line to the reel as well as terminal tackle, including hooks. Choosing the right knot and tying it properly is essential. Take the time to learn and properly tie a knot that can be used for various purposes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Matched rod and reel
  • Fishing line
  • Fish hook
  • Scissors
Step 1
Tie a uni-knot to attach fishing line to a reel or hooks. Begin forming the uni-knot by pulling several inches of the free end of the line around the spool of the reel or through the eye of the hook.
Step 2
Position the line so the free end and main line are alongside each other, forming a double line. Hold two inches of the double line in place with your thumb and fingers.
Step 3
Turn the free end of the line back toward the spool or hook, forming an elongated loop beneath the double line. Continue to hold the double line securely in place.
Step 4
Wrap the free end of the line around the double line and through the elongated loop four times. Begin forming the loops near the spool or hook eye and work up the line.
Step 5
Moisten the uni-knot with a small amount of water. Pull the knot down tightly around the main line and continue pulling to tighten it against the spool or hook eye. Trim the excess line from the free end with a pair of sharp scissors or snips.
