Fresh and saltwater fishing is a great activity for old and young anglers alike. From local farm ponds and lakes to exciting surf casting, many states feature a variety of waters suitable for a wide range of angling skill levels. However, many if not most waters require a license in order to fish. Purchasing a license is easily facilitated by online ordering through a state's wildlife agency. Typically, the process is easy to accomplish by most anglers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Internet access
  • Contact information
  • Drivers license
  • Credit card
Step 1
Access the website of the state wildlife agency where you will be fishing. Conduct a general search that includes the name of the state and "wildlife." This will typically be enough to get you to the site you need.
Step 2
Locate the regulations page of the website and determine what type of license you need to purchase. For example, if you do not live within the state, you will need a non-resident license.

Determine the basic type of license such as fresh or saltwater, and any additional stamps or permits such as a trout stamp or game lands use permit.
Step 3
Answer all questions honestly and to the best of your ability. Do not apply for a resident license, even though they are typically less expensive, if you do not live in the state.
Step 4
Select a short-term or long-term license based on your needs. Choose a license of only a few days if you do not intend on returning to the state in the near future. Consider an annual license if you are on an extended stay or will be returning within the year.
Step 5
Provide all information such as age, height, hair and eye color, weight and other personal information. Be prepared with a driver's license number or other issued identification number as well as home address and phone number. Pay for the online license with a credit card.
