Shakespeare rods and reels can handle freshwater and saltwater fishing applications. After replacing the fishing line on your Shakespeare rod, drop your fishing line to the bottom of your favorite saltwater fishing spot. Wait for king salmon, silver salmon, trout and striped bass to strike your bait.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Fishing hooks
Step 1
Pull the fishing line backwards off the reel. Check that the line passes back through each of the rod guides, located along the length of the fishing rod.
Step 2
Lift the bail of your spinning reel by hand. Remove the fishing line from the spool by hand. Cut the fishing knot used to secure the tag end of the fishing line using scissors.
Step 3
Tie on new fishing line. Unravel the tag end of the fishing line and tie it to the spool of your reel using a fishing knot. A baitcast reel requires the opposite action. Thread the fishing line through the line guides and then tie the fishing line to the spool.
Step 4
Wet the knot with saliva and close by pulling tightly against the spool.
Step 5
Cut away extra line using a line cutter.
Step 6
Close the bail and rotate the reel's handle to spool the line. Have an assistant hold the line to create tension or grip the line with your foot to keep it from spinning out freely.
Step 7
Spool the line until it is 1/8 inch forward of the rim. Cut excess line.
