Homemade Fishing Rod Storage

Whether you use your fishing rods every day or not as often as you'd like, a good storage system will protect them from damage and tangles. Rods and reels are not the most well-balanced of objects. Hanging them up and out of the way keeps them from falling over, being knocked around and accidentally getting stepped on. It is fairly simple to make a storage rack for fishing rods with a few supplies from the hardware store.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Several feet of 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe
  • Two 2x4 boards, each about 2 feet long
  • Clips
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver or electric drill with screw bit
Step 1
Cut the PVC piping to several equal lengths of 4 inches. Sand off rough edges after cutting. Use a hand saw to make the cuts.
Step 2
Attach the PVC pipe pieces to one of the 2x4 boards using the screws. First, drill two half-inch holes through each piece of PVC pipe--one hole should be one inch from one end and the second should be three inches from that same end (or two inches from the first hole). These will be access holes for you to drill your screws through the other side of the PVC pipe and on into your 2x4 board, thus affixing the pipe to the wood. Space the pipe pieces apart several inches so the rods are kept apart and repeat the process with rest of your PVC pieces, spacing them out equally down the 2x4. You'll end up with a piece of wood that will hang horizontally on a wall, with the PVC pipe pieces attached to it perpendicularly, or vertically.
Step 3
Attach clips to a separate 2x4. This will hold the tip of the fishing rod.
Step 4
Attach the 2x4 that holds the PVC pipe pieces to the wall in the garage or wherever you want to store the fishing rods. Attach the board near the bottom of the wall. Place a rod in the holder so that you can see where to place the second board that houses the clips. Line up the clips with the rod so the tip of the rod will go into the clip. Once you have the location of the clip board, attach it to the wall. Use screws and a drill to attach the boards.
