Many anglers know Shimano for its quality spinning and casting fishing reels and rods. Along with a line of rods and reels, Shimano also produces braided fishing line under the name Power Pro as of 2010. Available in 5 to 250 pound test strength and in colors such as moss green, high visibility yellow and white, Power Pro is a tough and durable line used by fresh and saltwater anglers. Installing Shimano Power Pro on a reel is a simple process that requires an additional step because of the small diameter and slick surface of the braided line.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Rod with matched reel
  • Shimano Power Pro line
  • Monofilament fishing line
  • Scissors
Step 1
Attach monofilament line to the spool of your reel with an arbor knot. Form the knot by passing several inches of the free end of the line around the spool of the reel.
Step 2
Form an overhand knot with the free end of the line so the loop goes around the main line. Tie a second overhand knot below the first one using only the free end of the line this time. Moisten both knots and pull down tightly against each other and the spool.
Step 3
Apply tension to the line in front of the reel and wind 25 to 30 yards of the monofilament line onto the spool as a backing. Cut the monofilament line free from the filler spool with scissors.
Step 4
Connect Shimano Power Pro line to the free end of the monofilament line using a double uni knot. Overlap several inches of the free end of the monofilament and Power Pro line. Hold the lines in the center where they cross.
Step 5
Hold 1 inch of the doubled monofilament and Power Pro line in place and turn the free end of the monofilament line back toward the center forming a loop. Wrap the free end of the monofilament around the doubled line and through the loop four times. Pull the knot down tight.
Step 6
Hold 1 inch of the Power Pro line in place and turn the free end back toward the center forming a loop. Wrap the free end of the Power Pro around the double line and through the loop four times and pull it down tight. Pull the main monofilament and Power Pro lines apart to tie the knots down against each other. Trim the knots with scissors.
Step 7
Apply tension to the line in front of the reel and wind line onto the spool until it is within 1/4 to 1/8 inch from the edge of the reel spool.
