Established in 1926, Grundens originally designed its rain gear to keep seamen dry. Today, it continues to make foul-weather gear for professionals and enthusiasts who spend time in extreme wet weather conditions. Unlike other rain gear made from waterproof and breathable materials, Grundens coats their products in PVC, which sacrifices breathability for superior waterproofing. PVC requires different care than other waterproof coatings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Liquid detergent
  • Hangar
  • Garment bag
Step 1
Hand wash your rain gear in warm water. Use liquid detergent or nondetergent because powdered soap can stick to PVC.
Step 2
Rinse your rain gear in cold water. Rinse thoroughly, making sure the detergent comes completely off the cotton interior of the rain gear.
Step 3
Hang dry with the inside of the rain gear facing out. The interior fabric will take longer to dry than the PVC-coated exterior.
Step 4
Turn the garment right side out to finish drying.
Step 5
Store your rain gear in a garment bag or away from other clothing. Over time, PVC breaks down, releasing ethylene gas that can damage natural fibers.
