How to Find Used Camping Tents

When purchasing a used camping tent, it is best to search for a tent that is in good condition, meaning it has little to no tears, surface damage, rust or mildew, and absolutely no missing parts--manufacturers of camping gear frequently discontinue older models, so finding a missing or damaged part might be more difficult that you would expect. Although the idea of purchasing the first camping tent you find might sound appealing, doing so could cost you in the long run. Take a slow-but-steady approach, and you will find the camping tent you need at the price you want.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Computer
  • Internet access
Step 1
Check the daily or weekly classified section of your local newspaper. Read the specifics carefully, so you know exactly what type of tent is being sold. Contact the seller and ask him for the manufacture date, not the purchase date--which does not verify when a tent was made--so you know the exact age of the camping tent. Ask if the tent has any visible damage such as holes, mildew or stains.
Step 2
Check with an online retailer that specializes in used outdoor gear. A wide brand selection is important when buying a used tent, so stay away from general auction sites altogether, and find an online retailer that specifically stocks used tents. Review each product description and request photographs, if not provided by the seller. Review the terms and conditions of the site including the return policy before purchasing your camping tent.
Step 3
Ask family and friends who have demonstrated a genuine interest in camping if they have or know of someone with a camping tent to sell. An avid camper will most likely perform routine maintenance on her camping gear and equipment, making a camping tent sold by such an individual more likely to be in good condition.
Step 4
Find a local garage sale and rummage through old camping gear and equipment. Open the camping tent and inspect the canvas for damage. Unzip the zippers and check the poles and stakes for surface damage and rust.
Step 5
Visit a camping club in your city and ask about used gear. Alternatively, post a sign asking sellers to contact you. Detail the type, size and brand, if applicable, of the camping tent you wish to purchase.

Tips & Warnings

White distilled vinegar can remove odor from canvas.

Camping parts and accessories are prone to damage over time.
