The Shakespeare SC20 is a heavy-duty reel designed for the angler who fishes for large game fish. The SC20 is a spin-cast reel that features a closed-face design that greatly reduces line issues, including back lash. Suitable for use by the beginner as well as the more advanced angler, the SC20 is easy to use while still being more than capable of handling big game fish. Changing the line is a necessary part of the routine maintenance and will help reduce the chances of losing the big one because of a weak or worn line.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Shakespeare SC20 with matching rod
  • Scissors
  • Monofilament fishing line
Step 1
Press the large spool-release button located on the back of the Shakespeare SC20 reel. Grasp the line in front of the reel and pull. Continue pulling line until you have removed all of the line from the spool.
Step 2
Open the front cover of the reel by turning slightly and then straight away from the reel. Cut the line free from the spool with a pair of sharp scissors.
Step 3
Thread new monofilament line through the rod tip and down through each successive line guide along the length of the rod. Feed the line through the front spool cover but do not place the cover on the reel at this point.
Step 4
Attach the new monofilament line to the spool with an arbor knot. Tie the arbor by wrapping several inches of line around the spool. Tie an overhand knot with the free end of the line so that the loop of the knot passes around the main line. Tie a second overhand knot below the first one using only the free end.
Step 5
Pull the knots tight against the spool of the Shakespeare SC20. Trim excess from the free end with a pair of scissors. Place the front spool cover back on the reel and secure it by turning it.
Step 6
Grasp the line in front of the SC20 reel and apply a slight amount of tension. Turn the handle of the reel to begin spooling line onto the reel. Continue winding line until the spool is filled just over 3/4 full. Do not fill the spool completely with line as this can cause casting problems.
