Throughout the years, Daiwa has become known for producing several lines of quality fishing reels. Typically, better quality reels cost more as you are getting better components, more ball bearings and smoother operation. To help ensure that your Daiwa reel performs at its best, routine cleaning should be done to remove dirt and other debris. Using oil is a good way to not only lubricate the reel but displace moisture that can lead to corrosion.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Rags
  • Quality reel oil
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Cotton swab
  • Small screw driver
Step 1
Examine the Daiwa reel, and look for any damage and excessive dirt and debris on the surface of the reel. Also look for screws that hold the halves of the reel body together that can provide access to the inner workings of the reel.
Step 2
Access and remove the spool from the reel. Casting reels will require that the side of the reel be opened so that the spool can slide out. Spinning reels will need to have the drag adjustment knob loosened and the bail opened so that the spool can slide forward.
Step 3
Wipe any debris and dirt from the spool and spool housing with a rag. Use a soft bristle brush and cotton swab, if necessary, to reach small crevices and corners. Apply a small amount of reel oil to a rag and wipe the spool and housing to remove loosened debris and apply a coating of reel oil. Pay particular attention to metal parts, moving parts and points where parts come into contact.
Step 4
Replace the spool and install the drag adjustment knob for spinning reels or securely latch the side of a casting reel.
Step 5
Remove the handle of the reel. Spinning reels will typically need to be loosened and removed by turning. A casting reel may require a small wrench to loosen a retaining nut for removal. Place the handle aside and locate the screws that hold the two halves of the reel together.
Step 6
Remove the screws from the reel and separate the reel body. Use a cotton swab and reel oil to thoroughly clean the internal gears and other parts of the reel. If reel grease is applied to certain parts, and the grease is still in good condition and is not dirty, do not remove the grease at this time. Only remove old oil and apply new oil to these parts.
Step 7
Assemble the reel by reversing the steps you followed to separate the two halves. Securely tighten, but do not over tighten, the screws holding the reel body together. Replace the handle tightening any retaining nuts. Wipe down the entire surface of the reel with oil to remove damaging finger prints or dirt. The oil will also displace moisture and provide a barrier against damaging moisture.
