FISHING TACKLE image by brelsbil from Fotolia.com

The Shakespeare Axiom casting reel is a quality reel offered to anglers who are looking for a quality reel that won't break the budget. Featuring four steel bearings for smooth operation and instant reverse for secure hook sets when a fish strikes, Axiom reels are durable and easy to use. Although many people shy away from casting reels fearing the dreaded backlash, fishing with an Axiom reel is easy to learn.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Fishing line
  • Practice plug or lure
Step 1
Hold the Axiom casting reel with your dominant hand. The low profile of the Axiom reel allows for holding the side of the reel with the palm of your hand and hooking your index finger around the lower front of the reel. The middle, ring and little fingers will wrap around the handle of the casting rod. Adjust the position of your hand until the rod and reel is comfortable in your hand and you can easily rest your thumb on the spool of the reel.
Step 2
Position the rod and reel in front of you and press the spool release on the upper rear of the Axiom spool. Locate the small friction control knob and either tighten or loosen it until the lure or practice plug falls slowly to the ground. Also set the large brake control on the reel to a middle position so that some braking will be applied. Tighten the star drag wheel by the handle completely and then loosen two to three turns. The reel is now adjusted for casting.
Step 3
Press the spool release with your thumb. Maintain pressure on the line wound on the spool of the reel with the pad of your thumb. Bring the rod tip up and back over your shoulder. Bend only your elbow and wrist, avoid raising your entire arm from the shoulder.
Step 4
Bring the rod tip back forward toward the target. As the rod tip approaches the target raise your thumb from the spool allowing the line to spool from the reel. As the plug or lure reaches the target, begin to apply light pressure to the line on the spool with your thumb.
Step 5
Apply steadily heavier pressure to the line on the spool with your thumb as the lure or plug moves down into the water. Turn the handle of the reel to engage the spool of the Axiom reel and begin retrieving the lure or plug. Continue turning the handle of the reel to retrieve the plug or lure for casting again.
