A window sash is a frame that holds panes of glass. Replacing the glass in your camper may be necessary if there is a crack or the windows are old and require changing. It is best to complete this task with the assistance of a helper. With just a few tools and about an hour, you can remove and replace the glass in a camper window frame sash.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Angle grinder or hacksaw
  • Cloth
  • Soap
  • Scraper
  • Silicone sealant
  • Window
  • Rubber window frame
  • Measuring tape
Step 1
Remove the struts from the outside of the camper van with an angle grinder or hacksaw. Cut the top and move toward the bottom of each strut. The strut holds the window flap at an angle, which provides shading and sits away from the window sash.
Step 2
Pull out the strut from the window sash by hand. Use force if necessary.
Step 3
Loosen the rubber frame, which is fitted within the window sash. Soak a cloth in soap and water and wet the corners of the frame to loosen it.
Step 4
Butt out the rubber frame, trim it along its edges or jockey it out from the window frame until you unseat it. Sit it down.
Step 5
Scrape away any old sealant from the window sash using a scraper.
Step 6
Peel the pane of glass from inside the rubber frame.
Step 7
Cut the new rubber frame to the dimensions of your camper window frame.
Step 8
Slot the rubber frame into the window frame.
Step 9
Slot the pane of glass into the rubber frame. Have an assistant on the outside of the camper to prevent the glass from toppling out to the ground.
Step 10
Seal the rubber frame by squeezing a silicone sealant around the rubber and the window frame.
Step 11
Replace the struts.

Tips & Warnings

Rubber seated windows are less expensive than bonded windows, according to Camper Van Life.

Allow sealant to dry before exposing it to water.
