How to Install a New Line on the Ultra Light Shakespeare Trigger Cast Reel

Shakespeare trigger cast reels are spinning reels with a small plastic trigger for easy casting. The trigger is curved to fit the forefinger and when pulled, it flips the bail into the casting position. Adding line to the reel requires one knot and a tension device to hold the line. The reel uses a level wind design to spin the line evenly and avoid tangles. The trigger is a standard feature on many modern reels and it makes casting convenient.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step 1
Attach the reel to a fishing rod. Open the bail on the reel by pulling on the trigger. Keep the bail in the open position.
Step 2
Feed the end of the line through the guides in the rod beginning at the tip and working towards the reel.
Step 3
With the bail open, tie an arbor knot to secure the line to the reel. Tie the knot by looping the line around the reel. Tie an overhand knot in the end of the line and pull it tight. Tie another overhand knot using the tag end of the line to trap the main stem of the line. Pull the knot tight and pull the main stem of the line to slide it on the reel. The first knot will stop it from slipping loose.
Step 4
Close the bail on the reel. Place the spool of line between the pages of a phone book or other weighted object to place tension on the line.
Step 5
Reel the line at a moderate pace. Stop reeling just before the reel is full. The small cushion to prevent future tangles.

Tips & Warnings

Use line that matches the reel ratings. Using line that is too large will reduce the amount of line that the spool can hold.

Over-lining the reel will cause the line to pop off the spool and tangle around the reel.
