Camping in the back woods or away from a fully-equipped kitchen or RV does not mean going without favorite treats, such as a hot, delicious latte, which is coffee with milk. If you have a basic camping cook set and know how to make a fire and boil water, you can make a latte in minutes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:
  • Micro-ground coffee
  • Milk
  • Fire
  • Bottle
  • Coffee mug
  • Kettle
  • Aluminum pan (optional)
  • Spoon
  • Pot holder
  • Frother (optional)
Step 1
Bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil over an open fire. Use a kettle, aluminum pan or fire-safe container. The water will start to boil at the center of the flame after about a minute.
Step 2
Add 1 cup of milk to a sealed container. Shake for 30 seconds or until bubbles form. Pour the cup of milk into a second kettle and place over the open flame. Allow the milk to remain on the fire until steam starts to form. You also can use an outdoor milk frother kit, which is available at camp stores and online.
Step 3
Add 2 tbsp. of micro-ground coffee to a travel mug that holds 6 to 8 oz. Adding more coffee will provide a stronger taste, which will give the latte more of an espresso flavor.
Step 4
Using a pot holder, remove the kettle with the water from the fire. Add the water to the coffee grounds. Cover with a lid.
Step 5
Remove the milk from the fire. While the milk is still hot, spoon about 1/3 to 2/3 cups onto the coffee. Taste before serving.

Tips & Warnings

Use filtered water, if possible.

For an authentic espresso taste, use a camping coffee maker to brew the espresso. You can also bring shots of pre-made espresso in a container for later use.

Other options include packing the espresso in a small kitchen funnel, holding it over the coffee mug and slowly pouring hot water over the funnel. Allow the espresso to drip into the mug slowly. Use the same quantity of espresso, milk and water as directed above.

If the milk gets too hot, it will go flat.
