Troubleshooting Generac RV Generators

Troubleshooting Generac RV Generators

Whether you are preparing for a weekend getaway or planning an extended road trip, you'll want to check the performance levels of your Generac generator and troubleshoot it for common engine and power problems. Doing so could keep you from being stranded in a remote location or on a back road should your recreational vehicle stall or completely shut down due to mechanical or electrical failure.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Performance Levels

Step 1
The performance levels for a Generac generator are an important source for how much power is available for use. The "forward power" indicates the supply or capacity of power the generator is equipped to handle. The reflected power indicates how much power has been used.
Step 2
Check that both levels are relatively equal. If there is a significant variation between the two levels, proceed to step 3.
Step 3
Check the power supply and add fuel as needed. You can continue to use the Generac generator but not for an extended period of time without damaging the generator if fuel is not immediately available.

Power Supply

Step 1
Use a voltmeter, which is a hand-held device, used to measure voltage. Hold the voltmeter to the power grid and wait for an indication of power. If the generator does not provide power, proceed to step 2.
Step 2
Check the indicator lights and display light on the Generac generator to determine if it has "died" or simply needs minor servicing. If neither the indicator lights nor display nights are on, flip the switch on the back of the generator to the "up" position.
Step 3
Test the generator for power. If the voltmeter does not indicate power is available, the generator has died.

Stalled Engine

Step 1
If the engine will not start when you press and hold the "start" button, check the electrical connection between the generator control board and the voltage converter using a voltmeter that has a "diode check" function.
Step 2
Plug the voltmeter into the control board and wait for a reading. If the control board indicates "violence," there may be a larger electrical problem or engine failure, in which case you'll need to contact a professional service person. If there is no report of violence, try to start the engine again. If it still does not start, proceed to step 3.
Step 3
Contact the Generac company at the number provided in the owner's manual for your generator, if the connection is fine, but the engine still will not start.
