How to Repair RV Generators

A generator system is made up of many parts and wires. The fuel tank powers the generator. Should the gas tank drop to half a load, most generators are programmed to stop running--a measure that will prevent an RV from depleting its complete supply of fuel. There are gas, propane and diesel generators for RV campers. Minor problems related to the generator set, battery and exhaust are easy to repair.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:
  • Air pump
  • Screwdriver
  • Preservative
Step 1
Use an air pump to dislodge rust and corrosion from between wire lines. Removal of corrosion and rust from wire lines will improve the overall function of a generator.
Step 2
Fix the generator exhaust system by gently pulling it back into the metal straps that hold it in place at the perimeter of the RV. Tighten the screws so the exhaust pipe remains securely in place. Check that the exhaust system is securely attached and extended beyond the rim of the RV. The exhaust system must extend forward so carbon monoxide does not travel up and into the vehicle while the generator is in use.
Step 3
Eliminate moisture build up in the generator. Exercise the generator with a 1/2 to 3/4 rate load on it. Allow the generator to heat up and as a result eliminate any moisture build up. This step will also lubricate the engine seals and eliminate carbon build up, which can significantly damage your generator.
Step 4
Prevent surging by treating the fuel system with a preservative such as Sta-Bil. Add a fuel system preservative and exercise the generator monthly if the RV has not been in use for a long period of time.
Step 5
Fix a weak house battery. Check for corrosion in the wire lines that run from the battery to the generator set. Next, take a reading of the house battery. It is important that you take the reading as you start the engine. Put a voltmeter on the battery side of the solenoid. If the voltage is less than 10, the problem is most likely a weak house. Recharge the house battery.

Tips & Warnings

RV generators require routine maintenance to reduce the number of repairs that can occur from misuse and neglect.

Not all generators comply to the same specifications, so always refer to the manufacturer's manual before implementing any repairs.
