The Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company has manufactured thousands of Penn reels since it first opened its door in 1932 in Philadelphia. Like any other reel, performance is largely determined by how well and how often the reel is cleaned and serviced for new parts such as the handle and faceplate. The company offers a service center for consumers in need of repair parts and accessories. Always clean your Penn reel regularly to improve reeling performance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Water
  • Detergent
  • Bucket
  • Air pump
  • Soft cotton cloth
Step 1
Unscrew the metal straps that hold the Penn reel to your fishing rod. The removal process is easy and only requires a screwdriver. Remove the reel from the rod after loosening the straps.
Step 2
Clean the surface of the reel with warm, soapy water. Rinse the reel and then soak it for 15 minutes to remove dirt, debris and salt water residue. It is important that you allow sufficient time for all dirt and other deposits to lift from the surface of the reel before drying it with a soft cotton cloth.
Step 3
Turn the Penn reel handle in a counterclockwise direction to remove it from the reel. There may be a screw that you have to remove, but this is not always true. If the handle is damaged, put it to the side. It is not possible to repair it, so you must replace it and assemble a new one in its place.
Step 4
Remove the screws that hold the faceplate in place. Use an air pump to dislodge and remove any dirt that may have been lodged under the faceplate. You can also use a cotton swab or cotton cloth to clean dirt that may be present on the reel. You cannot repair a faceplate, but you can replace it with a new one. Stripped screws can also be replaced.
Step 5
Lubricate the Penn reel with reel grease. Apply one drop of grease to each moveable part and gear.
Step 6
Reverse your steps to reassemble the Penn reel and reattach it to your rod.

Tips & Warnings

Maintain a clean Peen reel for optimum reeling.

Only use reel grease on a fishing reel.
