How to Replace RV Toilet Bowl Seals

Over time, an old toilet bowl seal can cause leaks and odors. To replace the seal you'll need to follow a few simple steps. While the task requires only one person, you may want to have an assistant, especially if you have difficulty lifting more than ten pounds. The job can be done in less than an hour, but you'll want to take your time fastening each part so leaks do not result.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Scrub brush
  • Plumber's sealant
  • Seal
Step 1
Remove the two bolts used to fasten the toilet to the floor. This step should require only a flat-head screwdriver. However, if you cannot easily make contact with the bolts using a flat-head screwdriver, use a socket extension to obtain more reach.
Step 2
Lift the toilet from the floor. (A slight twist may be necessary for an older toilet.) Once the toilet is removed, locate the toilet bowl seal between the mounting flange and the toilet.
Step 3
Remove the old seal from the flange using your hand or a flat-head screwdriver.
Step 4
Use a scrub brush to remove old adhesive and grime from the flange and toilet base.
Step 5
Install a new seal over the flange. Apply plumber's sealant.
Step 6
Fit the bolts back into place. Position the toilet over the bolts and then lower it into place. You have done this correctly if the bolts enter through the holes and the toilet is level.
Step 7
Fasten the bolts with the flat-head screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

Have an assistant help you lift and lower the toilet.

Be careful not to lose the bolts or any tools down the sewer opening. Cover for added protection against loss.
