Instructions for a Seiko Automatic Diver's Watch

Instructions for a Seiko Automatic Diver's Watch
A dive watch is an essential piece of safety gear that enables divers to monitor the length of their dive (bottom time). The Seiko Automatic Diver's Watch is a functional and attractive time piece that is water-resistant to 660 ft. and is automatically wound by wrist and hand movements during wear. The only user-adjustable parts of the watch are the crown and the bezel which lock in position by water-tight seals while underwater. Basic features for the date, timekeeping and luminous hands and numbers enable divers to easily read information at depth as easily as reading it topside.

Difficulty: Easy

Set Up

Things You’ll Need:
  • Seiko automatic diver's watch
  • Seiko automatic diver's watch
Step 1
Activate the watch by holding it in your hand and swinging your hand from side to side for 30 seconds.
Step 2
Turn the crown counter-clockwise to unlock. Pull out the crown to the first position (first click) and turn the crown until the desired date appears near the 3 o'clock position.
Step 3
Pull the crown out to the second position (second click) to set the time. Turn the crown until the desired time is set.

Check whether AM and PM is designated by turning the hour and minute hands past 12 o'clock. If the date advances when 12 o'clock is passed, the previous time set was PM.
Step 4
Push and hold the crown to the original position (flush against the watch) and turn clockwise to lock.

Setting Elapsed Time

Step 1
Turn the bezel on the outside of the watch face counter-clockwise until the point of the inverted triangle aligns with the minute hand. Observe the time at the start of your dive (e.g., 8:15 a.m.).
Step 2
Make sure to set the bezel before starting your dive because the bezel is designed to be harder to turn while underwater.
Step 3
Check the time that you ended your dive (e.g., 9:30 a.m.).
Step 4
Look at the minute hand and the number on the bezel that is aligned to identify the length of your dive. Note that the bezel will show up to 60 minutes of elapsed time.

If your dive was longer than one hour, the bezel will show the amount of time over one hour, so be sure to add one hour to this corresponding number. For example, the minute hand will correspond to "15" on the bezel after a 75-minute dive. For total elapsed dive time, add 60 to the number corresponding to the bezel.

Tips & Warnings

Wear your dive watch on your wrist while topside to keep it wound automatically whenever you move your wrist.

According to Seiko, the date will not change properly if it is set while the clock reads between 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. If the date must be set during this time frame, first adjust the time before setting the new date (then reset the correct time). The date reads sequentially from one to 31. Remember to adjust the date at the end of months with less than 31 days.
