Washing Solutions for Carhartt Rain Gear

Washing Solutions for Carhartt Rain Gear
Carhartt Rain Gear has a special water-repellent finish that works well in rainy conditions but requires special handling when you need being washed. Take care to wash your rain gear carefully and it will last you a lifetime. Waterproof finishes are more effective when they are clean, but only wash your gear when it is visibly dirty or smelly as repeated washes can shorten the lifespan of the finish.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Spot Cleaning

Things You’ll Need:
  • Dishwashing liquid Rag Old toothbrush Mild laundry detergent powder
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Rag
  • Old toothbrush
  • Mild laundry detergent powder
Step 1
Hang your Carhartt gear on a coat hanger in a dry, well-ventilated area as soon as you take it off. Make sure the sleeves, collars and trims aren't tucked in.
Step 2
Examine the outside surfaces for visible dirt or staining. If you see marks, fill a sink with hot water and a squirt of dishwashing detergent. Use the hot soapy water with a rag to rub the marks gently.
Step 3
Use the old toothbrush and hot soapy water to gently scrub dirt or stains on awkward areas such as zippers.

Full Cleaning

Step 1
Fill a sink or bathtub with warm water and a small scoop of extra-gentle detergent.
Step 2
Turn the rain gear inside out and submerge it in the hot water. Hand wash by swishing the garments around, rubbing the lining fabric together, lifting and re-submerging it in the water.
Step 3
Drain the soapy water away and fill the basin with clean cold water. Submerge and swish the gear around to rinse the soap, then repeat this two or three more times.
Step 4
Squeeze as much water out of the garment as possible. Hang the gear up in a dry place, inside or outside, until the lining is dry.
Step 5
Turn the garment the right way around so that the waterproof side can dry, too.

Tips & Warnings

Don't be tempted to machine wash your Carhartt rain gear. If it is still dirty after hand washing, take it to a specialist dry cleaner. If the rain gear is old and losing its waterproof surface, purchase spray-on waterproof coating to use. Always hang your rain gear up immediately after wearing it in the rain.
